It has been reported in medical studies that 50% of all heart attacks occur to Indians who are below the age of 50 and 25% of all heart attacks occur to Indians who are below the age of 40. It has also been reported that the urban population is three times more susceptible than people living in villages. Giving these statistics it is prudent to know more about how to prevent heart attack from being fatal and what may come in handy in the event of a person getting a heart attack.

The tell-tale warning signs or symptoms of an impending heart attack are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain that feels like pressure, squeezing or fullness
  • Pain radiating to the shoulder, arms, neck, jaw, back and the stomach which be intermittent or last a few minutes
  • Cold sweats
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness and/ or fainting
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling restless or panicky
  • Unexplained fatigue, especially in women and the elderly
  • Numbness, aching or tingling sensation, usually in the left arm, but may occur in the right arm too in some cases
  • Breathlessness or wheezing or coughing

He are are some steps worth remembering:

  • Call your emergency number: this is the first thing to do when a person around you is having a heart attack. This is a serious, life-threatening condition and a heart attack requires immediate attention.
  • Get an aspirin: unless you or the person is allergic to aspirin or the doctor has forbidden it, an aspirin and a glass of water can prevent blood clots from happening and provide some relief.
  • Tight clothing: make the person lie down and loosen any tight clothing
  • Nitrogylcerine tablets: If the doctor has prescribed any heart medication like nitroglycerine, administer the medicine as directed by the doctor.
  • CPR: If the person is unconscious, then it is necessary to perform a Cadiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) which is a basic first aid treatment.

We all have had heartburn in our lives. It starts with a burning sensation that feels in your chest with a bitter taste in your mouth. Heartburn is generally caused due by the acid reflux that your body faces due to consumption of spicy and fatty foods.

Although, we may have felt heartburn in our lives sometimes, it generally occurs in some people more often, when you have bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Here are 4 things which are making your heartburn worse

  • Caffeine

The acid reflux can be caused due to the relaxation of the sphincter muscles present in the oesophagus that prevents the stomach acids from emerging to the throat. One should be careful about the foods which causes the sphincter muscles to relax causing heartburn. Tea, coffee and chocolate can make your heartburn worse in you consume it on a daily basis.

  • Gum

Gum just like coffee has peppermint which causes the sphincter muscles to relax causing the backflow of acids from the stomach to your mouth. Therefore, if you experience heartburn more often avoid gum which contain peppermint oil in them.

  • Heavy feasts

When we eat more, the stomach starts digesting the food by creating more acids in the stomach. The more you eat, the more time and acid is required to flush the food to the intestine. Therefore, this increase the chances that there may be backflow of excess acid from the stomach to the oesophagus causing heartburn

  • Late night delicacies

Late night food causes you heartburn because you lie down after eating the food; the body posture makes the stomach acids to flush out into the oesophagus.

  • Alcohol

You should avoid drinking if you have heartburn. Alcohol has a dehydrating nature there it decreases the level of saliva in your mouth. Saliva plays a big part in clearing your mouth of the acids produced. With the decrease in the amount of saliva in your mouth, the chances of acid buildup also increases which in turn increase the risk of severe heartburn.

There are many ways to maintaining a healthy heart including doing regular exercise, eating a healthy diet which does not contain the fats and sodium and also maintaining a healthy weight. Often getting on the implementation of a healthier life is the hardest part of living healthy. Here are three ways to get you on the right track to maintaining a healthy heart.

  1. Try to increase the amount of exercise you do on a daily basis including 30 minutes of exercise per day for 5-7 days a week. The institutes tell us that breaking the 30 minutes of exercise into smaller portion of exercise per day will be good. For example, going for a walk during the morning, afternoons and evening for 10 minutes a day will be helpful, and be more manageable than going for a 30 minutes of walk. Remember, even the smallest bit of exercise is good enough and increase in activity however small it is adds-up.
  2. Enjoy a heart healthy diet, using these helpful guidelines. Be careful in the food you consume and always read the label of food packets. Check to see how much fat and sodium is present in the food and limit those foods in your diet which are high in sodium and fat. Sometimes foods which are low in fat have higher amount of sodium inorder to make up for taste. Add more whole grains, vegetables and fresh fruits in your diet. An easy way to cut grocery costs, which and only purchase them in season when the prices are lower.
  3. Be conscious of your weight. Ask your doctor to calculate the BMI or Body Mass Index which compares the height of your body to your weight. If your BMI is over 25 then you can be considered overweight category, and therefore are more susceptible to heart disease. You can manage your weight using the suggested exercise and healthy eating tips listed above.

Heart rhythm conditions are generally a preset to something more serious and is caused by an underlying cause. So what are the most common heart rhythm conditions present in patients today?

Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is when the atria, or upper chambers of the heart, begin to beat out of sync with the ventricles, or lower chambers of the heart. It is characterized by excessive beating, and often causes the heart to pump out less blood than normal. As a result a blood clot can be formed in the heart chambers, reaching the brain and causing a stroke or heart failure.

AF is typically due to an existing heart condition. Other conditions which causes AF include heart attack, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Dizziness, feeling out of breath, tiredness, a feeling that the heart is racing or fluttering, uneven heartbeat, and chest pain are all common symptoms.

AF is more common among older patients and may not present any symptoms before effect. Seeing a doctor after the onset of the first symptoms is important to avoid serious complications. The treatment of AF include bringing back the heart rhythm to as close to normal as possible and avoid the formation of blood clots in the heart as soon as possible.

Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia is a problem with the rhythm of the heartbeat beating too fast, too slow or with an irregular rhythm. Many arrhythmia are harmless, but some of the causes of arrhythmia can be life threatening, especially as it is seen that a lack of blood supply can cause brain damage, heart damage and damage to other organs.

Noticeable symptoms of arrhythmia include fainting, dizziness, heart palpitations, weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath and chest pain. Arrhythmia can be caused by heart disease, stress, smoking, heavy alcohol use and certain medications.

The treatment considered for patients depend on the severity and type of irregular heart rhythm. In most cases people with heart arrhythmia can lead normal, regular lives but never take the ‘wait-and-see’ approach.

Heart diseases are the leading causes of death among both men and women in the world. Most of the people who develop heart conditions have one or major factors which can be controlled by them on their own. These include smoking, high-blood pressure, uncontrolled sugar, abnormal cholesterol levels and stress. There are definite ways to tackle such cases which can be tackled by changes in lifestyle if you are aware.

Heart Attack:

  • The heart requires a regular supply of blood which is rich is food and oxygen. This supply of goodies are carried to the heart using the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries can become narrowed or blocked by plaque which ceases the supply. Blood clots can form these plaques and block the artery causing chest pains. The muscles which are supplied by this blood is soon starved of oxygen and ceases to function, known as heart attack. This can cause dangerous life threatening complications including dangerous arrhythmias.
  • While heart attack can be deadly, immediate treatment significantly increase the chance of survival and decrease the likelihood of severe long term effects. It is important to recognize the possible symptoms of this serious usually sudden onset condition.

Heart Attack Warning Signs:

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, where everybody can understand what’s happening, but most heart attack start slowly. With mild pain and discomfort, most people don’t understand what is going on until it is too late to call for help.

Chest discomfort:

Most heart attacks involved discomfort in the centre of the chest hat last more than a few minutes, or that goes away and come back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, burning squeezing, fullness or pain.

Discomfort in other areas of the upper body:

Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaws or stomach.

Shortness of breath: May occur with or without chest discomfort.

With more than 500 choices of energy drinks available in the market, energy drinks are increasingly popular with teens and young adults. However, studies have shown that consumption of energy drinks can have a negative effect on the blood pressure and heart function, especially for those with pre-existing conditions.

What the energy drink study found

A study has found that consuming upto 32 ounces of energy drink can increase the risk for raised blood pressure levels and an abnormal heart rhythm. Studies have shown also that consuming energy drinks can be damaging to the cardiovascular system than caffeine alone.

Though energy drinks will most comparatively contain the same levels of caffeine as two cups of coffee, they also contain non-caffeinated ingredients, such as taurine, I-carnitine, ginseng and high levels of sugar.

To give an idea of how damaging energy drinks can be as compared to coffee, a person who consumes an energy drinks raises his blood pressure level by 5 points, while a person who consumes coffee will raise it by 1 point.

Though it has been found that consuming drinks such as these may not be damaging for healthy individuals, it has been seen that you need to be extra careful while consuming these drink if you have a heard conditions.

Drinking alternatives to Energy Drinks

If you have to cut back on energy drinks, there are many healthier alternatives present in our market.

  • Coffee: By far the most common way to get your caffeine fix is to consume a cup of coffee in the morning. You can opt for iced or hot. To save money, make your own brew at home.
  • Green tea: Looking for that caffeine fix and you don’t want to drink coffee? Then a healthier alternative is to consume green tea which comes packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
  • Flavored waters: There are many options of flavored water which contain no sugar and can be made with carbonated water or still water. However, an even healthier option is to consume naturally flavored water. Toss a few watermelon, strawberry, blackberry or cucumber slices in a glass of water to enjoy a little extra flavor and vitamins.

Cardiovascular health is a big deal for your body. The heart has to pump blood to all parts of the body, have white and red blood cells to transport oxygen, have veins and arteries to bring blood and transport blood to various parts of the body. Without all of this, life would simply be not possible.

That is why taking care of your cardiovascular system is such a vital part of everyday life. Here are some things which you can do to improve your overall heart health.

Quit Smoking

Smoking not only steals and robs the heart of oxygen rich blood; there are chances of it off-shooting and leading to other cardiovascular problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Since quitting smoking is one of the leading preventable causes of death and disease, quitting is the best medicine for your heart.

Lower Your Blood Pressure

Checking your blood pressure should be a regular part of your heart health routine. The higher your blood pressure the harder your heart needs to work. The harder your heart works, the more the pressure on the walls of your arteries, which can eventually lead to blood vessel damage. Some of the ways to reduce and lower your blood pressure may include:

  • Eating less sodium
  • Losing weight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Quit smoking
  • Reduce Stress Levels

Control your Cholesterol Levels

HDL cholesterol is good for your body, but high levels of LDL cholesterol are not. Usually found in saturated fats of foods and meat, LDL at higher level can be dangerous as they calcify into hard plaque. You can lower your cholesterol by changing up your eating habits, losing some excess weight, start an exercise program or talking with your doctor about cholesterol medications.
